Using culture and media to inspire a great song.
Art has inspired many through out the years, expressed in poetry, song and written word describing the vision of the creator. Mona Lisa the song by Nat King Cole written by Ray Evans and Jay Livingston, is inspired by a named piece of art. The Mona Lisa is used to woo a desired woman with comparison to her beauty as intentions.
This an excellent use of inspiration on the writers part. Taking a famous painting and bringing it to life.
What art work inspires you? And, how will you present it?
While watching the movie “Space Odyssey, David Bowie became inspired and created characters for his song.
David Bowie’s 1969 song “Space Oddity” is an interpretation of “Rocket Man”, Telling a story of in the astronauts view.
“The Rocket Man”, a short story in the book “Illustrated Man” by Ray Bradbury, tells a story of an astronaut who returns to earth only for three consecutive days to visit his wife and son. Told in his son perspective, that also wants to become an rocket man learns of his fathers battles with yearning for the stars at home and in space yearning for home.
Elton John’s “Rocket Man” was as interpretation of the book told by the astronaut having to leave home due his job and how he was dealing with the departure from his family and work.
These are two examples of a song inspiring two different artist. Each artist was able to find away to create ideas from these medias.
